Can You Drink Coffee and Have Healthy, White Teeth? It’s Possible.

 It's not easy to keep your teeth white when you love what stains them.

Yellow, ugly teeth primarily come from two things: one, staining from foods, drinks and smoking and two, from the erosion and thinning of your enamel which exposes the yellowish inner tooth.

Another reason, less common, is from exposure to certain chemicals or from taking medications such as tetracycline.

If your teeth are already pretty yellow or dull, you will likely have to consider professional whitening.

But whether it be coffee, wine, or just some yummy berries there are ways to lessen the damage, and protect your enamel. After all, it is important that you keep your smile bright, white and healthy for years to come!

Drink Water to Clean Your Teeth Right After Eating

This is one of the easiest ways to avoid teeth staining because it helps cleanse your mouth and keeps food particles away from your teeth as well. This will also keep you hydrated, so important for promoting healthy saliva production–preventing a dry mouth and helping to keep your teeth healthy. 

A dry mouth is a great environment for bacteria to grow and contributes to plaque development, tooth decay, and gum disease.

Floss Daily, Keep that Bacteria on the Run

Did you know that when you brush, you are only cleaning about 40% of your teeth?

Everyone should floss at least once a day, reaching the hard-to-reach parts of the teeth that cannot be easily cleaned by a toothbrush. This is a great way to keep the bacteria from building up on your teeth and causing discoloration over time due to enamel erosion.

Interesting fact, did you know that the main reason you floss is to disrupt the bacterial growth cycle, not to remove food particles?

Brush Your Teeth After Meals – But Give it a Wait

Brushing witha natural and healthy toothpaste helps get rid of all those leftover bits that would otherwise end up on your teeth in between meals and contribute to them turning yellow over time.

But your mouth can turn acidic after eating and the acids can soften your enamel. In this softened state, brushing can actually be destructive to your enamel. It is best to just rinse with water after eating and wait at least 30 minutes before brushing. This gives your saliva a chance to balance out the acids and restore minerals to your enamel.

It is best to rinse with plain water. You can even add some salt or baking soda for a healthier rinse.
